Couch to 5k
We are offering a Couch to 5km course starting Tuesday 29th April at 6.15pm from where the club meet by the skatepark in Castle Grounds. If you or anyone you know would be interested, you would be very welcome.
REGISTRATION OPEN
We will be following the nationally recognised NHS Couch to 5km programme and will be organised and led by Peel Road Runners run leaders .
How long is the course, and how often do I need to run?
The course lasts nine weeks, and you will ideally need to commit to running three times a week. One of those runs will be with us on a Tuesday evening. The course is designed to finish the same week as the annual Gate Gallop, which has a 5km fun run on Sunday, June 29th, at Anker Valley Sports Pitches, Tamworth.
Is there a fee?
Yes. There will be a £10 charge. No charge for Peel Road Runners members, as it is included in their annual fee.
Am I obligated to join a club afterward?
No, there is no obligation to join Peel Road Runners after the course.
What happens after the course?
Peel Road Runners hold a club run on Tuesdays (meeting at the skatepark from 6:45 pm for a 7 pm start). Within this, there is a group (the “Pips”) that is specifically targeted at those new to running. There is no pressure to attend, but it is offered to help you continue with your progression and to allow you to meet fellow club members.
Who is the course open to?
The course is open to anyone who wants to start or get back into running. The course is open to everyone over the age of 18 years. You participate in the course at your own risk and will need to sign a disclaimer at the start, providing an emergency contact number. If you have a child that you need to accompany you on the course due to child care reasons then please contact us directly.
Do I need any special equipment or clothing?
You will need a pair of trainers that are suitable to run in & preferably that have been recommended to you at a local running shop. Having the right trainers for YOU can help prevent injury. Don’t buy trainers because they are popular, your friend likes them, or they are on offer. Everyone has their own running gait and needs trainers to suit them.
Is there an app ?
You can use the NHS Couch to 5km app to help support you.
Can I do this course whilst dieting?
Yes, but there is no dieting or nutritional advice given on the course. All we ask is that you have eaten properly on the day, which is something to bear in mind if you are on the 5/2 diet.
What happens if I miss a week?
It is not unusual for people not to be able to make all 9 weeks. If you miss a Tuesday night, you should still aim to complete all planned runs that week so that you keep on track. If you post on the Peel Public FB group page, others on the course quite often will run with you. If you are unable to keep up with the planned runs, seek advice from the experienced run leaders.
I’m worried I won’t keep up with everyone else!
Don’t worry – everyone runs at their own pace, and we operate a system of ‘run backs’ to keep the group together.
If you have any further questions or are interested in signing up for the course please contact us using one of the methods below.
