What are club standards?
The purpose of the club standards is to provide members with an incentive to train and improve their race times and for their achievements to be recognised by the club. They also allow each runner, regardless of ability, to compare their performances against (possibly younger) members in the club taking into account age and gender.
We also use the standards to help determine winners of the club awards each year.
How many standards are there?
There are seven different standards for members to try and achieve. The standards have been calculated against the World standard times for each distance, in each age group, for males and females.
- Platinum – 120% of World standard
- Diamond – 127.5% of World standard
- Gold – 137.5% of World standard
- Silver – 150% of World standard
- Bronze – 165% of World standard
- Copper – 182.5% of World standard
- Pewter – 202.5% of World standard

Frequently asked questions
How do I achieve a club standard?
You must achieve the standard in a recognised race which is affiliated to an athletics national governing body, and has a certificate of an accurately measured course (no fun-runs, cross-country or off-road events). The logo of an accurately measured certified course should be on the race entry form or race website. Please be aware that some local races do not have a certificate of an accurately measured course, and therefore will not count towards the club standards.
How many club standards can I achieve?
You can achieve a club standard in each of the seven distances. However, you can only achieve one standard per distance. If you achieve a standard but then achieve a higher standard in the same year, you will be awarded the higher standard.
Once you move to a new age category you are able to achieve the standards for that age category.
Who can achieve the club standards?
All first claim members of the club can apply to achieve a club standard.
Will parkrun count towards the standards?
Although many parkrun courses are not certified as accurately measured courses, we will allow parkrun results to count towards the club standards. This is due to the number of people in the club completing parkrun.
How do age categories work?
Different standards exist within 5 year banded age categories and qualification of a club standard is based on your age on race day. If you change age category part way through the year the standard time before your birthday is for the lower age category and for the higher age category after your birthday.
When you advance to a new age category you are eligible for a new set of standards.
